You will typically need the following to apply for a USA study visa for universities in the United States:
Step 1: Apply to an American university and be accepted
The first step is to apply to (and ultimately be accepted by) a university in the United States. Most full-time undergraduate and graduate programs in the United States require applications by December or January of each year. Typically, admission notifications are sent in March and April.
Step 2: Obtain the Form I-20 or DS-2019 from your school.
Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) for F-1 and M-1 students and Form DS-2019 (Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status) for J-1 students are issued upon acceptance to a school.
Step 3: Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee in
After receiving your I-20 or DS-2019 form from your school, go online and pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. Once again, the cost is 350 USD for F-1/M-1 students and 220 USD for J-1 students. (Those participating in short-term J-1 visa programs will pay only $35 USD.)
Locate an Embassy or Consulate of the United States in Your Area
Step 4: You must submit your international USA study visa application at the US embassy or consulate closest to you (ideally, in the city or region where you reside). The United States Department of State provides an online tool for locating US embassies and consulates.

Step 5: Complete the online DS-160 form
Complete the Online Non-Immigrant Visa Application (Form DS-160) next.
On this application, you will also select the US embassy where your visa interview will take place.

After submitting Form DS-160, contact your nearest US embassy or consulate (preferably the one you listed on your online application) to schedule your visa interview.
Step 7: Make your visa application fee payment.
Pay the application fee of 160 USD thereafter. This fee is identical regardless of where you apply or your origin.
It is essential to note that the exact date you must pay this fee will vary depending on your embassy.
Step 8: Attend your visa interview
The visa application procedure concludes with the interview. This interview will determine whether or not a study visa for the United States is granted.
Step 9: Pay the visa issuance fee
Certain students who are authorized for a study visa in the United States are required to pay a visa issuance fee. Your obligation to pay this fee depends on your nationality and the reciprocity agreement between your country and the United States. On the USA Study visa website, you can consult a chart to determine if you must pay a visa issuance fee.
Step 10: Get Your Visa
If you have met all of the aforementioned requirements and have been granted an international study visa to the United States, your embassy will return your passport to you with your new visa inside. Notably, some embassies will require you to pick it up in person, whereas others will ship it back to you.
Depending on the embassy, the processing time for visas can vary.
Graduates with an F1 USA study visa are eligible for up to 12 months of OPT (optional practical training). That means you can work for a year following graduation.
It is a temporary work authorization that allows students to gain practical experience in their field of study.
You will be required to apply for a work visa if you wish to continue working in the United States. Even if you don’t have a job offer or haven’t applied for OPT, you can remain in the United States for up to 60 days after completing a course at a US university.
The visa for student dependents is known as an F2 Visa. The F2 visa is a non-immigrant dependent visa that allows the immediate relatives of F1 USA study visa holders to enter the United States. The spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21 who are dependents of a student in the United States.
As evidence of financial stability, the applicant’s bank statements, tax records, and employment documents are required.
Extended visa stays
The F2 visa dependents are automatically eligible to apply for an extension if the F1 visa holder extends his/her stay. To renew your F2 visa, you must submit Form I-539 and evidence of your financial status.
Alteration of visa status
You may enter the United States with an F2 visa and then request a change of visa status. You can change your visa status to F1 by enrolling in a higher education program at a university in the United States. If you find a suitable job, you can apply for a change of visa status.
